Bergisch Gladbach is a large district town in the Bergisches Land east of Cologne. The old town of Bergisch Gladbach was first mentioned in a document in 1271 as “Gla debag.” The area later developed into a center of a region consisting of numerous residential settlements. It belonged to the county, or later the Duchy of Berg, and was administered by an official from Porz. Bergisch Gladbach is located about 10 kilometers east of the Rhine, on the striking western edge of the Bergisches Höhen against the Lower Rhine Bay. To the west, the city borders Cologne.

At the bus station in the Bensberg district, the underground Stadtbahn line 1 of KVB towards Cologne begins. The Bensberg bus station and the bus station at the S-Bahn station in the city center serve as central hubs and transfer points both for the bus lines to the S-Bahn or Stadtbahn and between the bus lines themselves. There is another direct connection to Cologne with the express bus 40, which runs from the Bensberg bus station directly to the Cologne main train station.

Bergisch Gladbach only received motorway connections within the city limits in the 1970s with the construction of the A 4 Köln-Olpe and interchanges in Refrath, Bensberg, and Moitzfeld. Since the 1930s, the present-day A 3 Oberhausen–Cologne–Frankfurt has existed with the closest interchanges being Delbrück and Königsforst.
