LOCATION
Wolfsburg is an independent city in eastern Lower Saxony. The city was founded in 1938 as the seat of the Volkswagen plant and, with around 125,000 inhabitants, is the fifth largest city in Lower Saxony. Wolfsburg is one of the few planned cities from the first half of the 20th century in Germany. Until May 1945, the city was known as "Stadt des KdF-Wagens bei Fallersleben." In 1972, the population exceeded 100,000, and Wolfsburg became a major city. In 2010, the gross domestic product per capita was the highest of all German cities.
