The town of Braubach is located in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate. The town belongs to the collective municipality of Loreley, of which it is the largest community with over 3,000 inhabitants. It is situated in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It became particularly well known due to its location below Marksburg, the only preserved hill castle on the Middle Rhine. According to state planning, Braubach is designated as a basic center.

Braubach is located on the right bank of the Rhine, about ten kilometers south of Koblenz, where the Mühlbach, as a right tributary of the Rhine, has carved two deep valleys into the Rhenish Slate Mountains. On the one hand, these valleys allowed roads to be built from the Rhine to the surrounding municipalities in the Taunus, and on the other hand, one of these valleys nearly completely encloses, on all sides with steep slopes, a solitary mountain southeast of Braubach, which thus provides ideal conditions for the construction of a castle. This is where Marksburg was built.
