Recklinghausen is connected to the A2 and A43 motorways, and the B225 federal highway begins within the city limits. The Wallring encircles the historic old town and forms the starting point for important ingress and egress roads. Recklinghausen also has a connection to shipping; the city's harbor is located in the southern part of the city on the Rhine-Herne Canal.
