Location:
The seat of the Catholic Diocese of Hildesheim was, until 1974, an independent town. In 1974, Hildesheim was designated a large independent city as part of the territorial reform in Lower Saxony, later becoming a major city. Since then, together with the area of the former district Hildesheim-Marienburg—and from 1977, expanded by the former district Alfeld (Leine)—Hildesheim has formed the district of Hildesheim, of which it is the administrative center. From 1885 until 1978 there existed an administrative region of Hildesheim. Since 2014 the regional representative for the Leine-Weser area—which covers the entire, now dissolved (2004), administrative region of Hanover—has been based in the city. Hildesheim is home to three institutions of higher education: the University of Hildesheim Foundation, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HAWK), and the North German University of Justice. St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Michael's Church are among the most significant examples of early Romanesque architecture and have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1985. With approximately 101,319 inhabitants, Hildesheim offers excellent infrastructure. The demand for rental apartments is very high, resulting in a very low vacancy rate. Several large construction projects featuring both rental and owner-occupied properties attest to the strong demand for housing.
