Görlitz – often considered the most beautiful town in Germany – today is home to around 56,000 residents. Situated directly on the 15th Meridian, Görlitz is the easternmost town in Germany, but with the expansion of the European Union, it has also come to occupy a central place in European politics. The town, together with Zgorzelec – the district east of the Neiße – being declared a European City, underscores cross-border cooperation. Located at the tri-border area, proximity to neighboring Poland and the Czech Republic is paramount. But even the Saxon state capital Dresden is only a stone’s throw away via the A4 motorway.
After the city center, the Südstadt is the second-largest district of Görlitz, home to around 9,000 residents. The Südstadt is bordered by the railway lines and the Görlitz train station to the north and east, the vineyard to the south, and the adjoining districts of Biesnitz & Rauschwalde to the west. Beautifully preserved and lovingly renovated Gründerzeit buildings define the character of this district. The houses along the spacious streets, many with front gardens, still evoke the chic flair of the Gründer time. Tree-lined streets provide a particularly lovely green image. Parks and squares create small green oases, rounding off the overall appearance. The infrastructure has been adapted to meet today’s needs. The Südstadt is home to kindergartens, elementary and secondary schools, as well as school transport facilities. Supermarkets for daily needs, doctors, and pharmacies are within walking distance. Completing the picture are the petting zoo, the Neißebad, as well as various restaurants and hotels. The Südstadt is, of course, connected to the public transport network, with trams and bus lines ensuring a quick connection to the other districts.
