Hamburg Sankt Georg Hamburg 20099Public transport 1 minute of walkingThe Apartment
185 square meters, 6 rooms, 3.90-meter ceiling height, two bathrooms, one toilet.
You enter the building from the second half of the 19th century through a stately entrance hall and, after only a few steps, find yourself before your apartment door, which hints at the impressive ceiling height.
Beyond that, the entrance area of the 28-square-meter hallway awaits you. Its Pitchpine wood planks lead you to every room – wide enough for a wardrobe or even for parking bicycles, and long enough to try them out.
To the right lies the first of a total of five bedrooms, offering a direct view of Hansaplatz and, like all the rooms, featuring a plank floor (15 square meters). Across from the entrance, also overlooking the square, is the very spacious living kitchen, into which you can, with almost 60 square meters, even invite the entire family. With daylight streaming in from two directions, you cook at an open fitted kitchen and help yourself from the practical built-in cupboard behind you, while your guests admire the herringbone parquet and the well-preserved stucco at the long wooden counter.
Back at the entrance, you follow the corridor and find, to the left, a spacious utility room with connections for a washing machine and dryer, followed by a guest WC and the centrally located bathroom. To the right are two smaller rooms, measuring 14 and 10 square meters, overlooking a quiet inner courtyard. To the left follows another room (17 square meters) with its own shower room and a view into the back courtyard, which is also the direction of the largest room of the apartment at the end of the hallway, measuring 24 square meters.
Despite its prominent location right in the middle of Hansaplatz, you enjoy complete calm and privacy in four of the rooms, while the living kitchen and the room facing outward comfortably satisfy any curiosity about the activity on the square from the raised ground floor.
The rare ceiling height of 3.90 meters not only creates a spacious, airy feeling but is also extremely practical – for example, for families – as it allows for loft beds or mezzanines, effectively creating several rooms in one.
The residential community consists equally of families, couples, and singles, including a musician, a publisher, a total of 12 parties, almost all of whom are owners. In 2016, the building was modernized with new windows and in 2019 with a new roof covering including a glass dome; in 2013, the rear facade was renovated.
This Gründerzeit building is located in the middle of Hansaplatz, right in view of the Hansa statue that seems to be waving at you.
Hansaplatz has always been a meeting point for artists and creatives. A world-famous DJ lives here, a platinum musician and a well-known actor opposite, not far away one of Germany’s most famous TV presenters, and a renowned magician has opened a museum of magic here. At Hansaplatz, people from the most diverse creative fields come together, creating the impression that the square itself is the stage of the adjacent theater – where, admittedly, dramas also play out. For several years now, Hansaplatz has sometimes become a meeting point for unfortunate people, occasionally landing in the news.
But it is precisely for this reason that Hansaplatz is still, despite being only a few minutes’ walk from the main train station, something of a central insider tip in Hamburg. And the pattern is not new: artists enhance an as-yet undefined area until it becomes trendy and unaffordable. Gründerzeit buildings, urban planning upgrades, the renovation of the famous Hansabrunnen in the middle of the square, together with more and more gastronomy around and simply the unbeatable location, are making Hansaplatz increasingly popular, even with families.
Compared to other “upscale” districts, such as Eppendorf or Winterhude, St. Georg is much more heterogeneous. The Lange Reihe adjoining Hansaplatz is lined with fashion boutiques, unique restaurants, and trendy cafés, and it is hard to find a street in Hamburg that radiates such savoir-faire and joie de vivre in the summer as the Lange Reihe. The lively murmur reaches all the way to Hansaplatz, which in turn is full of tables and chairs. On the other side of Hansaplatz runs the city-wide famous Steindamm, where, in addition to Hamburg’s famous original language cinema “Savoy” and several variety theatres, numerous international eateries and shops create an almost bazaar-like atmosphere on weekends – with loudly haggling vegetable vendors, a convoy of expensive cars, and the aromas of freshly baked bread, grilled foods, and oriental spices.
Numerous cultural institutions are located not far from Hansaplatz – the theater is within sight, and just a few hundred meters behind that, the art gallery. Galleries, museums, cinemas, and theaters – nearly the entire cultural institutional life of Hamburg is within walking distance from here. Also just a few minutes’ walk away is the Outer Alster, equally popular with joggers, walkers, and water sports enthusiasts, and a little closer is Lohmühlenpark, with its walking and basketball courts, a boules area, and a large playground. The main train station, where all of Hamburg’s S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines stop, also stands just a short walk away, separating St. Georg from downtown Hamburg with all its major shops and the town hall – which is also within walking distance.
