Idyllically located at the confluence of the Dahme with the Spree, Grünau owes its name to the village description “Grüne Aue” which dates back to 1749.
Already in 1866, the Berlin-Görlitzer Railway established a stop in Grünau. At the same time, the Berliner Dampfschifffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft (Berlin Steamship Company) opened a landing stage on the Dahme. Thus, Grünau developed into a popular excursion destination, visited by thousands of Berliners seeking relaxation on summer weekends.
In this charming location, numerous representatives of the financially well-off middle class came after 1875 and built the first factory buildings, stately villas, and flourishing restaurants.
At the latest with the Dahme rowing competition on June 27, 1880, the area was discovered for water sports. Around the year 1900, the regatta course – which still exists today – was built with a covered grandstand and a pavilion for the German Kaiser, and in 1936 it was the venue for the Olympic rowing and canoe competitions.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the development of infrastructure in and around Grünau proceeded rapidly. In 1905, in conjunction with Adlershof and Altglienicke, the first waterworks were established, and three years later, the gas and electricity networks were expanded. Further industrial production and service companies (including Germany’s largest laundry) settled along the banks of the Dahme. With industrialization, many more comfortable buildings were constructed in Grünau’s idyllic setting, solidifying Grünau’s reputation as a villa suburb in the southeast of the capital. Already Theodor Fontane described Grünau’s idyllic location in his journeys through the Margraviate of Brandenburg.
