To the west of the town's edge, the Zschopau River flows by; furthermore, the Mühlbach stream runs through the district of the same name as well as the town center.

Frankenberg gained particular economic importance through the cigar-making trade and the automotive industry, notably through the Marko Framo (Frankenberger Motorenwerke), which produced engines there between 1923 and 1933.

A landmark of the town is the Evangelical Lutheran church St. Aegidien; its accompanying church tower can already be seen from the highway. The lower part of the tower was built as early as 1499 and has been preserved to this day. The largest green space near the town center is the Friedenspark, which was created out of a disused cemetery around 1890/1891.

Approximately 4 kilometers from the town center is the municipality of Dittersbach, which, together with its district Neudörfchen, forms the Frankenberg district Dittersbach. The Lützelbach stream flows through the village, which merges into the Zschopau south of Sachsenburg. To the north of Dittersbach run Federal Road 169 and the Federal Motorway 4, which can be reached within a few minutes by car, providing excellent transport connections to the surrounding cities.
