The town is a spa resort with two clinics and has borne the prefix Bad since 1992 as a spa and air-curing resort. Bad Zwesten is situated in the eastern foothills of the Kellerwald, approximately 8 km (as the crow flies) southeast of Bad Wildungen. The town, along with its districts, is located in the valleys of the Schwalm—a southern tributary of the Eder—and its tributaries, the Wälzebach and Urff. Additionally, it lies on the eastern border of the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park. The southern districts, Oberurff-Schiffelborn and Niederurff, are located along the Urff, which flows into the Schwalm below Niederurff. The highest elevation is the 636-meter-high Hunsrück in the Kellerwald (not to be confused with the Hunsrück mountain range located west of the Rhine). To the north, Bad Zwesten borders the town of Fritzlar; to the east, the town of Borken; to the south, the municipalities of Neuental and Jesberg (all in the Schwalm-Eder district); and to the west, the municipality of Haina and the town of Bad Wildungen (both in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district). Via the B3 towards Borken, the A49 can be reached in 10 minutes, providing a good connection to Kassel and central Hesse (Ohmtal triangle A5/A49).
