What is a “housing community” for seniors?

A care housing community is a service concept for people in need of care, especially in old age or advanced old age. It has so far been particularly successful in Germany as well as in other German-speaking countries for people with dementia who require care. It is a family-like form of living.

This care model is also fundamentally suitable for those in need of care who do not suffer from a mental illness. However, a prerequisite is the willingness and ability to participate in managing the home and its organization – either personally or through relatives. Moreover, a mix of people in need of care with and without dementia in such a living arrangement is conceivable and possibly even beneficial. In general, it is a “participatory housing community.” This is a form of living in which people share an apartment or house and support each other in everyday life. The focus is on communal activity and mutual assistance (in which relatives can also be involved). This can include everyday tasks around the house, joint outings, or support in overcoming challenges. The goal is to create a lively and supportive community where residents help each other and learn from one another while also having access to professional assistance.

Living together takes place in the common areas of the senior housing community. These are spaces that can be used jointly by all residents, their relatives, and the on-site support staff. In these rooms, it must be possible to prepare, cook, and share meals together. For this purpose, a kitchen with ample space is advantageous. The resident can remain in the kitchen area to be more easily involved in meal preparation activities. The common room/kitchen is the hallmark of any housing community.
