The municipality of Ostseebad Nienhagen has about 2,000 inhabitants and meets all the requirements of a "Baltic seaside resort." The town lies on the Baltic coast between Heiligendamm and Rostock-Warnemünde. Large parts of the municipal area are forested, under landscape conservation, or used for agriculture. To the west of the town, above the approximately 12-meter-high cliff, is the well-known "Ghost Forest."
