The house was designed at the time of the first energy crisis (increasing energy prices, weekend driving bans) and built with sustainable insulation measures learned from that experience (for example, the exterior of the house has 6 cm of insulation, with an overall wall thickness of 32.5 cm; the double-shell brick wall on the west side is intended to store the sun’s heat for the living room). High-quality aluminum windows and aluminum sliding glass doors with electric external blinds were installed on the ground and basement levels. In the conversion and insulation of the attic, high-quality plastic windows were also used. Over the past twenty years, various measures have been taken to prevent energy losses from the house: improvement of the base insulation, roof insulation and finishing with 200 mm thick compression felt, a vapor barrier and 20 mm drywall, and, last year, new double-glazed insulating glass in the entrance area. Furthermore, the oil heating system was replaced by a new heating system featuring an environmentally friendly blue burner and a 160 l water storage tank (with PV connection) from Buderus. The water supply lines for the ground floor were renewed with composite pipes for the bathrooms and WC. The electrical installation is in fault-free condition; due to extensions in the attic, sauna, workshop, garage, and PV system, the electrical installation was expanded.
Additional comfort is provided by an upscale finish with ceramic tiled floors (60×60 cm) with underfloor heating, two wood-burning fireplaces, double-glazed aluminum windows, and large aluminum sliding glass doors with thermal insulation and electric external blinds. The southern terrace is sheltered from wind and sun and is equipped with an electric awning.
Further energy generation is provided by a 2 kW solar system with a 6 kW battery storage. This system can be used either for hot water generation or for electricity generation without feeding into the grid. There are also connections available for charging an electric vehicle, and the system is controllable via SMARTHOME. An intelligent automatic control of the energy management system is installed.
