The Free State of Saxony is located in the eastern part of the Federal Republic of Germany. About 85 km from the state capital Dresden lies Chemnitz, the third-largest city in the region. With 250,000 inhabitants and an area of approximately 221.03 km², Chemnitz is one of the most important economic regions among the new federal states.
Approximately 23.9 km and a 25-minute drive away is the town of Frankenberg in the district of Mittelsachsen. It is situated within the Saxon Granulite Mountains in the foreland of the Ore Mountains along the Zschopau valley, surrounded by many mixed forests such as Lützeltal, Striegistal, or Buchenwald.
To the west of the town limits, the Zschopau flows by, and the Mühlbach runs through the eponymous district as well as the town’s center.
Frankenberg gained significant economic importance through the cigar-making craft and the automobile industry, notably through Marko Framo (Frankenberg Engine Works), which operated there between 1923 and 1933.
A landmark of the town is the Evangelical Lutheran St. Aegidien Church, whose tower is visible even from the highway. The lower part of the tower was constructed as early as 1499 and remains intact to this day. The largest green space near the city center is Friedenspark, created around 1890/1891 from a decommissioned cemetery.
Approximately 4 kilometers from the city center is the municipality of Dittersbach, which, together with its district Neudörfchen, forms the Frankenberg district of Dittersbach. The Lützelbach flows through the town and empties into the Zschopau south of Sachsenburg. North of Dittersbach, the federal highway B169 and Autobahn 4 run by, both reachable within a few minutes by car, providing excellent connectivity to the surrounding cities.
