Lemkendorf has always been small, yet history was made here as well. Originally, Slavic settlers inhabited the area. It later evolved into a farming village; hence the derivation of the name “Lemken” … it is said to be derived from the old High German word “Lämmchen” (little lamb).

Typical of the villages on Fehmarn are the village squares with their large village ponds.

The houses were built around these, which in professional circles led to the term “round village” (“Rundlingsdörfer”).
