Görlitz – considered by many to be the most beautiful city in Germany – is home to around 56,000 residents today. Situated directly on the 15th Meridian, Görlitz is Germany’s easternmost city, yet with the expansion of the European Union, it has also become politically central in Europe. The European City, proclaimed together with Zgorzelec, the district east of the Neisse, underlines cross-border cooperation. Located at the tri-border area, the proximity to its neighbors Poland and the Czech Republic is paramount. Moreover, the Saxon state capital, Dresden, is only a stone’s throw away via the A4 motorway.
Südstadt is, after the city center, the second largest district of Görlitz. Approximately 9,000 residents call this district home. Südstadt is bordered by the railway tracks and the Görlitz train station to the north and east, by the vineyard area to the south, and by the adjoining districts of Biesnitz & Rauschwalde to the west. Well-preserved and lovingly refurbished Gründerzeit houses punctuate the character of this district. The houses, some with front gardens along the spacious streets, still evoke the sophisticated flair of the Gründerzeit era. Tree-lined avenues give many streets an especially beautiful, green appearance. Parks and squares create small green oases and complete the overall impression. The infrastructure has been adapted to modern needs. Südstadt is home to kindergartens, primary and secondary schools as well as school transport services. Daily necessities can be found in nearby supermarkets, and doctors and pharmacies are within walking distance. Completing the overall picture are the petting zoo, the Neisse Bath, and various restaurants and hotels. Of course, Südstadt is connected to the public transportation network, with trams and bus lines providing quick links to the other city districts.
