We offer an exceptional architectural statement from the 1970s. The successful design and implementation were led by a professor of architecture at the Kiel University of Art.

In the wake of the 1972 Olympics in Kiel-Schilksee, forward-looking development plans were realized. As a result, four innovative housing groups were created—some of which received architecture awards.

The house for sale is part of one of these housing groups, which our architect parents, together with two other architect families, planned and designed.

Not far from the steep coastline and the bathing beach, a complex of ten single-family houses was built using a modular system with, at the time, unconventional floor plans. These houses are arranged in two rows around a park-like green area. In the lower area between the rows, there is a community house with a sauna and an event room. In front of it, a terrace with a children’s playground and a fire pit adjoins.

A defining feature of the flat-roofed buildings is the consistent use of color—reminiscent of Bauhaus teachings—as well as the recurring stylistic elements combined with the individuality of each design. The unmistakable and appealing appearance of the group sets it apart from many other, albeit otherwise upscale, residential developments in the Schilksee-Süd neighborhood, all against the backdrop of the Kiel Fjord panorama.

The unity of design continues from the exterior right into every detail of the interior furnishings. Each house features its own garden at the back, forming an additional private area.

It is only about 200 meters to the steep coastline and the beach. The long-time residents even make the journey in a bathrobe—and in every season.

Everyday shops, along with doctors and pharmacies, are within walking distance. By bike or on a longer stroll, you can enjoy one of Kiel’s best fish sandwiches in the former Olympic harbor.

A little further away lies the chic seaside resort of Strande, where at the far end of the fjord, there is still a lighthouse.

Also, the neighboring Friedrichsort is easily reachable by bike. According to a survey by the “Kieler Nachrichten,” it is home to Kiel’s best bakery and, in our opinion, the tastiest ice cream, as well as several retail shops, restaurants, and the Saturday market.

If you prefer cycling not into the town but towards the water, you will reach the now quite fashionable Falckensteiner Beach—a large sandy beach with dunes, sandbanks, a lighthouse, a mini-golf course, and various dining options.

Schilksee has a kindergarten, a primary school, and various sports clubs.

Public transport is well-developed, with direct bus lines to Kiel. An especially unique mode of transportation is the ferry, which runs from Friedrichsort across the fjord to the center.

The center is also conveniently reachable by car via the high bridge.

The building systems and bathrooms remain in their original condition. The house features underfloor heating with supplementary radiators beneath the windows. The gas boiler was renewed a few years ago. At that time, HEWI door handles and Vola bathroom fittings were almost obligatory in architectural circles—and these are still preserved in their original form. The use of sand-lime brick and brightly colored, lacquered wood panels reflects Scandinavian aesthetics. The built-in furniture designed by the architects is part of the concept, as is the idea that every house was furnished with modern appliances, lighting, and art.
