Sometimes beauty is very close at hand: the Groov on the Rhine in the south of Cologne, less than 15 kilometers from the Cathedral in the Porz-Zündorf district. The peninsula, with a silted river branch, is known beyond the city limits as a versatile recreational area. Visitors are greeted by an expansive Rhine riverside landscape with beautiful sandy beaches and paths around the two inland water bodies – the Lower and Upper Groov.

The original island in the river was connected to the shore by a dam in 1849. Today, you can pedal a boat on the twin lakes. Its park-like appearance was bestowed on the area during a redesign in the mid-1970s.

The Groov is one of the most attractive excursion destinations for people of all ages, and it is especially popular as a cycling destination. On pleasant weekends, the bike paths along the left bank past Rodenkirchen or along the right bank by the Poller Wiesen can become somewhat crowded in stretches.
