Gera has 40 districts in 12 boroughs. The district “Untermhaus,” where Schellingstraße 12 is located, is and always has been one of the most sought-after parts of town, characterized by many old mansions.

In addition to the now numerous industrial companies, including a large Amazon delivery center with over 1,000 employees, Gera also hosts a Bundeswehr site and several supra-regional authorities. Since 1999, one of the four offices of the German Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund) with currently about 750 employees has been located here, along with a branch of the Federal Office for Central Services and Unresolved Asset Issues and the district administration of the Mining Accident Insurance Association and the Accident Insurance Association for Trade and Warehousing Logistics in Gera.

With the SRH Forest Clinic serving as an acute care hospital providing maximum care (located in the Debschwitz district) along with numerous practices and Medical Care Centers, Gera also has a well-developed healthcare infrastructure. Moreover, Gera serves as a shopping hub for approximately 450,000 people in the catchment area of this East Thuringian center.
