Hamburg Sankt Georg Hamburg 20099Public transport 1 minute of walkingApartment
185 square meters, 6 rooms, 3.90-meter high ceilings, two bathrooms, one toilet.
You enter this building from the second half of the 19th century through an elegant entrance hall and, after a few steps, find yourself at your apartment door, which already hints at the impressive ceiling height.
Beyond, you are greeted by the entrance area of the 28-square-meter spacious hall, whose Pitchpine floorboards lead you to all the rooms – wide enough for a wardrobe or even to park bicycles, and long enough to try them out.
To the right lies the first of a total of five bedrooms, which offers a direct view of Hansaplatz and, like all the rooms, features hall flooring (15 square meters). Opposite the entrance, also overlooking the square, is the very generous eat-in kitchen, where you can, with almost 60 square meters, even invite the whole family over. With daylight streaming in from two directions, you’ll cook at an open fitted kitchen while helping yourself to treats from the practical built-in cupboard behind you, as your guests admire the herringbone parquet and the well-preserved stucco along the long wooden counter.
Back at the entrance, you follow the corridor and find, to the left, a spacious storage room with connections for a washing machine and dryer, followed by a guest WC and the centrally located bathroom. To the right are two smaller rooms, measuring 14 and 10 square meters, with views into a quiet inner courtyard. Continuing to the left is another room (17 square meters) with its own shower room and a view into the rear courtyard, toward which the largest room of the apartment (24 square meters) at the end of the hall is also oriented.
Despite the prominent location right in the middle of Hansaplatz, you enjoy complete peace and privacy in four of the rooms, while the eat-in kitchen and the forward-facing room on the raised ground floor comfortably satisfy any curiosity about the lively square outside.
The rare ceiling height of 3.90 meters provides a spacious, airy feeling and is also extremely practical – for example, families can make use of loft beds or elevated platforms to create several functional areas within one room.
The residential community is composed of families, couples, and singles alike – including a musician, a publisher, a total of 12 households, almost all of them owner-occupied. In 2016 the building was modernized with new windows and, in 2019, received a new roof covering with a glass dome, while the rear façade was renovated in 2013.
The Gründerzeit building is located right in the heart of Hansaplatz, directly in view of the Hansa Statue that seems to wave at you.
Hansaplatz has always been a meeting place for artists and creative individuals. A world-famous DJ lives here, a platinum musician and a well-known actor reside opposite, and not far away is one of Germany’s best-known TV presenters, while a renowned magician has even opened a museum of magic here. At Hansaplatz, people from the most diverse creative fields come together – giving the impression that the square itself is the stage of the adjacent theater, where, admittedly, dramas do play out. In recent years, Hansaplatz has occasionally become a meeting point for troubled individuals, sometimes landing it in the news.
Yet it is precisely for this reason that Hansaplatz remains, even today and only a few minutes’ walk from the main train station, something like Hamburg’s best-kept secret. And this pattern is not new: artists transform an as-yet undefined place until it becomes trendy and then unaffordable. Gründerzeit buildings, urban planning improvements, a renovation of the famous Hansabrunnen in the middle of the square, increasingly more surrounding restaurants, and simply the unbeatable location are making Hansaplatz ever more popular, even among families.
Compared to other “upscale” districts, such as Eppendorf or Winterhude, St. Georg is considerably more heterogeneous. The Lange Reihe adjoining Hansaplatz is lined with fashion boutiques, eclectic restaurants, and trendy cafés, and it is hard to find a street in Hamburg that exudes such savoir-vivre and zest for life in the summer as the Lange Reihe does. The pleasant murmur carries all the way to Hansaplatz, which itself is filled with tables and chairs. On the other side of Hansaplatz runs the famous Steindamm, where, in addition to Hamburg’s renowned original language cinema “Savoy” and several variety theatres, numerous international bars and shops create, especially on weekends, an atmosphere almost reminiscent of a bazaar – with loudly haggling vegetable vendors, a parade of expensive cars, and the aromas of freshly baked bread, grilled treats, and oriental spices.
Numerous cultural institutions are located not far from Hansaplatz – the theater is within sight, and just a few hundred meters away is the Kunsthalle. Galleries, museums, cinemas, and theaters – almost the entire spectrum of Hamburg’s cultural institutions – can be reached on foot from here. Just a few minutes’ walk away is also the Außenalster, popular with joggers, walkers, and water sports enthusiasts alike, and a little closer is the Lohmühlenpark, complete with walking and basketball courts, a boules area, and a large playground. The main train station, where all of Hamburg’s S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines stop, ensures that you always get home, no matter which train you are on, and it separates St. Georg from Hamburg’s city center with all its major shops and the town hall – also accessible on foot.
