The university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald is the county town of the Vorpommern-Greifswald district and is located between the islands of Rügen and Usedom at the mouth of the river Ryck, which flows into the Danish Wieck. This is a bay of the Greifswald Bodden. The city has approximately 56,000 inhabitants, making it the fifth largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Greifswald is the youngest city in eastern Germany: every fourth resident is between 18 and 30 years old. Founded in 1456, the University of Greifswald is, after Rostock, the second oldest university in the Baltic Sea region; roughly 10,000 students study there and about 6,000 university employees work at the institution. Greifswald is an internationally significant center for teaching and research. There are about 70 institutes, centers, and research facilities in the city, 55 of which are part of the university. Together with the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, Greifswald forms an upper center for around 250,000 people. The motorway connection to the A20 is easily reached, and the Usedomer Bäderbahn provides quick access to the islands of Rügen and Usedom.
The municipal area is very well developed in terms of infrastructure. Federal road B194, as well as state roads 26 and 30, traverse the municipality. The motorway (A20) with its two exits within the municipality (Klevenow and Griebenow) and the Rügen connector B96 together form a motorway triangle. A station for regional and commuter trains is located in Rakow, and the towns are further served by public transportation.
Situated between Grimmen and Greifswald, many families choose the municipal area as their place of residence. A kindergarten is located in the village, and the school is about 8 km away – reachable daily by public transport. The area is mostly used for agricultural purposes. The neighboring locality of Kaschow is also known beyond the region for its 36-hole golf course, the Golfpark "Strelasund", which is widely acclaimed.
