The district of Lautenthal is a state-recognized climatic spa which, since 1972, has belonged to the town of Langelsheim in the district of Goslar in Lower Saxony, and since 2013 it has again officially been called a “mountain town.” Lautenthal is located in the Innerste valley between the Clausthal-Zellerfeld district of Wildemann and Langelsheim in the northwestern Upper Harz. The two rivers, Innerste and Laute, flow through the mountain town. In the direction of Langelsheim, the Innerste is dammed to form the Innerste Valley Reservoir.
