Ballenstedt – the cradle of Anhalt – is a fascinating place steeped in history, located in the beautiful Harz region. The House of Ascania built here the most impressive castle in the Harz. As a former residence city, Ballenstedt still radiates a tangible elegance today with many architectural and scenic highlights. The castle avenue, the castle with its garden and the castle theater – one of the oldest preserved theater buildings in Germany – are the foremost attractions, among a multitude of other sights in a region rich in culture and history with high recreational value. Since 2010, the town of Ballenstedt has been awarded the title “State-Recognized Recreational Area.”
The nearby Unterharz offers numerous opportunities for hiking and active winter sports. In many of the ponds in the area, one can go swimming.
In the immediate vicinity are the World Heritage town of Quedlinburg (14 km), Thale with the Hexentanzplatz (20 km), the district town of Halberstadt (32 km), and the town of the Ascanians, Aschersleben (19 km). The state capital, Magdeburg, is 65 km away.
The picturesque Selke Valley with the Selke Valley Railway and the wild, romantic Bode Valley make for worthwhile excursions, and of course, the Brocken as the highest mountain in the Harz.
The ground and first floors are accessible via a lift and are thus barrier-free.
