You should not expect any response to merely stating "I want to see the apartment."

P.S. The landlords are of retirement age and speak only German. Since there are only 2 households in the building and a strong emphasis is placed on community (meaning, for example, a friendly chat in the hallway), I appreciate your understanding that only inquiries in German will be answered.
