Marienborn, with around 4,500 residents, is one of the smallest districts of Mainz. Early recorded names for Marienborn include Brunnon, Burne, and Born (Middle High German for “source”). In the 18th and 19th centuries, Marienborn was part of the fortress wall surrounding Mainz. Thanks to its location at the foot of the Rheinhessen plateau, the area was ideally suited as a military headquarters; for example, in 1793 during the siege and recapture of French-occupied Mainz by a Prussian army. Duke Karl August of Weimar, whose troops were also stationed in Marienborn at the time, brought his minister Johann Wolfgang von Goethe along, who observed the fighting around the town from May 27 until June 26.

Marienborn has retained its village character. The medieval layout with typical Central German farmsteads clustered around the church is a good example of this. The active community life in associations, the activities of local churches and community centers, as well as local festivals, demonstrate a strong sense of community. The “Marienborner Kerb” and the Christmas market are integral parts of life in this small but charming district.
