What is a “shared living community” for seniors?

A care shared living community is a service offering for people in need of care, especially in older age or advanced age. So far, it has proven particularly successful in Germany and in other German-speaking countries, especially for dementia patients in need of care. It is a family-like housing arrangement.

This care model is in principle also suitable for people in need of care who do not suffer from a mental illness. However, the prerequisite is the willingness and ability to participate in the management and organization of the apartment, either by themselves or with the help of relatives. In addition, a mix of care-dependent individuals with and without dementia in such a living arrangement is conceivable and possibly beneficial. In general, it is a “participatory shared-living community” – a housing form in which people live together in an apartment or house and support each other in everyday life. The focus is on communal activities and mutual help (in which relatives can also be involved). This can include everyday household tasks, joint outings, or support in tackling challenges. The goal is to create a lively and supportive community where residents help each other, learn from one another, and can also access professional assistance.

Living together takes place in the common areas of the seniors’ shared-living community. These are spaces that can be used jointly by all residents, their relatives, and the on-site caregivers. In these rooms, it must be possible to prepare meals, cook, and dine together. For this purpose, a kitchen with ample space is advantageous. Residents can spend time there and be more easily involved in meal preparation activities. The common room/kitchen is the flagship of any shared-living community.
