Altenburg is a former residence town with more than 1,000 years of history, located in the east of the Free State of Thuringia, right in the heart of the Central German Metropolitan Region. Altenburg is the county town of the Altenburger Land district. With around 31,100 inhabitants, the town is designated in state planning as a medium center with some functions of an upper center. Altenburg is known for the card game Skat, which was invented here after 1810. There is an exhibition dedicated to it in the castle and playing card museum.

Altenburg lies in the middle of the Leipzig–Chemnitz–Gera city triangle – 39 km south of Leipzig, 38 km northwest of Chemnitz, 28 km northeast of Gera, and 31 km north of Zwickau. It was built on a hilly area, whose lowest point in Zschernitzsch lies at 162 m above NN and the highest in Mockzig at 261 m above NN.
