In the old town of Grünberg there are many half-timbered buildings with beautiful facades (mostly from the 15th century) as well as numerous other historically significant buildings, squares, and structures. Particularly noteworthy are:
Market Square with Town Hall and Fountain: The market square is considered the center of Grünberg’s old town. The most prominent building located there is the town hall, a Renaissance building from 1586/87. It was built by the bailiff Hermann Rüdiger from Hersfeld. Since 1593, it has been in municipal ownership. In the past, a market and trading space was located in the hall on the ground floor. At the entrance, an iron ell is on display. The fountain at the market with its “Brunnengucker” is a 36-meter deep draw well that was in operation until around 1500. It was filled in and forgotten in 1820, then rediscovered in 1980.
Diebsturm: The Diebsturm is the landmark of the town of Grünberg and was built around 1300 as part of the city fortifications (height 25 m). Later, it served as a prison for some time. In 1895/96, it was converted into a water tower. Today, it houses an exhibition on the history of the city fortifications and functions as an observation tower.
